Sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in university students: prevalence and association with social determinants

Abstract: Introduction: Changes in the Sleep/Wake Cycle (SWC) of university students can have consequences on physical, mental and social health. In addition, some behaviors adopted at this stage may be associated with SWC impairment. Objective: Therefore, study aims to identify which factors determinants health (SDH) are poor sleep quality excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) students. Method: This is a cross-sectional that included 298 students, aged between 18 35 years; 73.2% were females from countryside state Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Data collected following questionnaires: Health Sleep, Munich Chronotype Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Epworth Sleepiness Scale. To assess association SDH sleepiness, Poisson Regression robust variance was performed. Result: The prevalence among 79.2% 51.3%, respectively. Between intermediate health, higher rate observed who reported problems previous month (18.4%), smoked (23.5%), drank stimulating beverages close bedtime (25.8%) those used electronic devices before during week (18.4%) when compared did not these behaviors. Regarding justified wake-up time weekend because academic demand showed, respectively, 27% 34% lower EDS than group Conclusions: high biological most them, behavioral factors.
